tumblr still blows for a lot of reasons don’t get too full of yourselves just bc twitter’s having another crisis
This.
The staff running this place are still a bunch of bigots, no matter how twee they are. And even if they aren’t, they’re letting a bigot algorithm call the shots on LGBT+ posts, which they’re “allowed” to do on account of their hilariously vague nsfw “”“"policy”“”“
…and even though they were sued over it before, Supreme Court just made it perfectly legal to keep discriminating against LGBT+ users for– whatever the hell reason a flesh and blood bigot + a bigot algorithm say they should.
This is an AWFUL website for full-time artists, and as much as I had hopes of this being an eventual landing pad, the treatment I and other artists have suffered at the hands of staff in the name of ~community guidelines~ is unforgivable.
Tumblr IS NOT A GOOD WEBSITE.
The staff ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS.
Twitter dying IS NOT A GOOD THING.

reddit is dying twitter is dying tumblr is next as people move over here in response and the corporate side of the company starts drooling at the prospect of EVEN MORE MONEY so they make staff change the website to be shittier and more like the dying websites. whats next? fireside gathering at my house where we pass the posting stick around that indicates youre allowed to make a post with words that come out of your mouth
lets go back to
gneocitieseven tho it does *also* function like a social media (you can follow people and comment), at least it’s removed from algorithm, and you can design and create your own space for whatever purpose
though yeah, the death of social media is scary and shitty as many of us artists make living off it, but we all need to make an effort to take the internet back. connect with people (tho discord is also being shit now), make your own site at the outskirts of the internet…
idk what the answer is except to start building our own sites and forums. i’d genuinely love to see forums make a comeback. making one isnt hard - there are free host sites, and while i was a teen and the forums were all the rage, i had my own little forums where people would come and write/create/roleplay. ive been thinking of making one again, tho promoting it is hard, since people prefer social media these days.
in any case, we need to move from the social media ruled by the corps and algorithms and take the internet back. tumblr is currently the best site, but even it won’t last forever. all we have is what we make.
and yeah, this is really showing me how fragile the internet is. even neocities/indie forums can have servers shut down, but it seems to be at least more durable than social media which is subject to changes from the money-hungry capitalists at every turn, based on their whims.
it’s wild to me that the internet is entering an apocalyptic era which wasn’t something any of us growing up in 2000es when internet was at its peak with innovation and information exchange could imagine
start making zines, organize, make communities, make non-social websites. if you’re an artist, make your own website and start a mailing list. make multiple backups, make different e-mails, save everything, get an external hard drive. start downloading sites which you enjoy (i can’t say how many sites i loved have gone down). save pictures, texts, everything. information is disappearing.
Tumblr, buddy, listen to me. This is an unprecedented opportunity. You can snap up all of the pie here, and become defacto internet goodguy easy. All you gotta do is… drop the nsfw ban. Unambiguously. Announce that dicks are back on the menu. You want people subscribed the blogs? You want people to actually use your Post+ function? Porn. Let us use it for porn. The youngins aren’t joining this site anyway, you’re not competing with tiktok. The vaguely horny 20-40 demographic though? You can have that. You can have all of that. Think about it.
Do you know how many pinup artists alone are itching to come back to tumblr, but dont because of the unclear, seemingly arbitrary application of your nsfw policy? These are insanely talented people who are practically begging to give you content. For free. But you gotta change the policy. We can’t keep dancing around this. Just think of publicity. The drama. A complete 180. You’d kill it tumblr. You could make it happen. Please.
This ⬆️⬆️⬆️ @staff take notes
I do not think the porn will ever return, but thirded.
Putting it behind a Post+ Pay wall with Mature Community Labels would be a great start, though! Even just bringing back ‘tasteful nudes/lewds’ and 'female presenting nipples’ would be huge.
Also, it’s not like porn ever went away, you can still easily run across blogs with hardcore gifs and explicit pics and clips, but the reblogs get axed or wiped clean or the blogs get deactivated p quickly. There aren’t really mature filters on those wack-a-mole type users or even the 'shadowban’ dashboard screening or blog overlay. It’s incredibly frustrating tbh.
So, really, the current status quo is just inhibiting responsible adult content producers from having stable blogs and followings and engagement. I get that SESTA/FOSTA is the root of the changes, but making your site more hospitable for anon users reposting stolen work from SWs and tube sites than the ACTUAL adult content creators is the most bass ackwards bullshit.
Pls be true

It’s not “everyone” acting like it’s normal. The majority of people know something’s wrong they just don’t have the tools to fix it. Maybe a plurality don’t know that the problem is capitalism, they blame it on something else, but they’re still aware there’s a problem. “Everyone” is just too exhausted from working 4 jobs, 50 hours a week to scream into the void in their spare time.
guess I gotta pull out this bad boy again huh
